Welcome dear readers, to a new issue of SquareTwo! It features the first review by our new book review editor, Emilee Pugh Bell. And for the first time in SquareTwo’s history, we offer a poem in our issue’s lineup.
First up, Savannah Eccles Johnston reminds us of a lesser known speech by Abraham Lincoln that will really get you thinking about the most important threat to the United States. There are parallels to the Book of Mormon, and a warning for our time.
Next, V.H. Cassler discusses the “poise” of the universe. There is a real tension between what family relations are meant to be, and what they are here on earth. This is particularly difficult for mothers to navigate. What path did our Mother tread before us in this?
Third, we debut a poem by Hope Rose Cassler on the subject of child marriage. One of the most grievous human rights abuses in our world, the poem explores the perspectives involved in such “marriages.”
Next, we have a book review by Kerry M. Kartchner of To Stop the Slaughter: Just War and the Book of Mormon by Morgan Deane. Deane has written numerous books on military history and doctrine, and Kartchner finds much to admire in this new book.
Fifth, we have the debut review of SquareTwo’s new book review editor, Emilee Pugh Bell. Bell found a memoir published in 1938 by Mary Ann Hafen, originally from Switzerland, who came by handcart to the Salt Lake Valley and carved out a life for herself and her family in southern Utah and Nevada. She was married twice polygamously, and her recollections are full of insight into the lives of women in the early Church.
Sixth, another book review! V.H. Cassler explores the thought of C.S. Lewis on the perennial subject of pain and its meaning and purpose. Lewis has much to offer Latter-day Saints on the dual narrative arcs of the Great Plan of Happiness, as well as hell and heaven.
Last, but not least, we have responses from our editorial board members to the last issue’s Readers’ Puzzle on the General Authority talks that have stirred them the most, and we have a new Readers’ Puzzle on the issue of family estrangement, which afflicts all too many families in our culture.
Enjoy this new issue! And consider a submission of your own!
