We are pleased to introduce our Summer 2010 issue to our readers. This is a themed issue, and focuses on contemporary LDS thought concerning national security issues.

Our lead article is by Earl Fry, professor of political science at Brigham Young University. He has recently published a book, entitled Lament for America: Decline of the Superpower, Plan for Renewal published by the University of Toronto Press in 2010, which has received critical acclaim. Here he abridges one chapter from that volume, focusing on the security implications of the new economic challenges facing America's households in the wake of the 2008 recession.

Following that thought-provoking opening, we present the Second Annual Alma Don Sorensen Essays. Alma Don Sorensen, an emeritus professor of political philosophy at Brigham Young University, was committed to the ideal of LDS persons having the capacity to offer persuasive and principled voices in the public square. He also felt it was especially important for young people in the Church to develop this capability. The Second Annual Alma Don Sorensen Essays feature seven young LDS authors offering their best recommendations in regards to U.S. national security and foreign policy. Anna Caruso, Aryel Cianflone, David Cramer, Rachel Zirkle, Jeremy Ferguson, Asher Henrie, and Alan Taylor present proposals on everything from the International Criminal Court to ballistic missile defense to conflicts in the South China Sea to the structure of the US intelligence community.

Finally, our own Ryan Decker reviews Hanging By The Thread, a new LDS political thriller by Donald B. Anderson, published by Granite Publishing in 2010.
